It is Rose Festival time here again! This is the 100 anniversary for this Portland event. For a change it is sunny and war. The rainy weather is what gives us the wonderful roses. But is really not good for parades, fair ride and Dragon Boat races.
One of the things that happens is that the "fleet" comes in. Ships of every size, shape and registry can be seen tied to our sea wall along the Willamette river (pronounced Wil-lamette). This year is no exception with the Tall ships hearkening back to 100 years ago. (From the Rose Festival home page)The "Hawaiian Chieftain and Lady Washington (made famous by its appearances in the original “Pirates of the Caribbean” and other movies). These two-masted ships are classic replicas of merchant ships from the golden age of sea exploration."
The steam whistle from our paddle wheeler blowing to welcome them to port and the image of them on the water really made you think you might have traveled back in time.
